BAL High Performance Program update: Targeting World Championships 2017 and Gold Coast 2018

Published Tue 11 Jul 2017

Already in 2017, Boxing Australia has taken athletes to international training camps and competitions in Philippines, Germany, Poland, USA, UK and Hungary. The elite men’s team will compete at the World Championships in Germany in August, and throughout the remainder of 2017 there will be further opportunities for international training and competition.

Boxing Australia is delighted to formalise the AIS Combat Centre in Canberra as the BAL Centre of Excellence, where male and female high performance and developing athletes and coaches will be invited for intensive training camps throughout 2017 and 2018. The BAL Centre of Excellence will offer long-stay and short-stay opportunities, tailored to the individual needs of athletes and the goals of the high performance program; which are podium performances at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2020 Olympic Games.

In a bold move, specifically targeting increased medal opportunities in women’s boxing, the BAL Centre of Excellence will kick off with a number of female boxers taking up long-stay opportunities from August 2017.

Whilst the intensive training camp opportunities are primarily aimed at athletes categorised as part of the National Athlete Support Program (NASP), at the discretion of Boxing Australia, invitations to participate may also be given to athletes who have shown potential for future elite performance and specifically selected training partners.

Boxing Australia wishes to express its gratitude to the AIS Combat Centre for the significant levels of support it continues to provide to the high performance program. We are delighted that this level of support has been further enhanced in 2017 and 2018, involving high performance management and performance support for athletes engaged in intensive training camps at the BAL Centre of Excellence.
