Boxing Australia release – Elite Boxing on Prime time TV
Published Fri 14 Jul 2017
As the National body for amateur boxing, one of our charter activities is to grow the awareness of and opportunities within our sport. We see so many of our member clubs doing a fantastic job in this regard through their local communities and our grassroots support continues to grow. However, we remain a minority sport in terms of mainstream news coverage. This lack of exposure has been a challenge that our community has struggled with for many years and continue to do so today.
Therefore, it is with pleasure that I advise of a major breakthrough in this situation. The “Absco Sheds Elite Boxing Championship” is a new invitational tournament involving four catchweight divisions (Male 63kg; 70kg; 78kg & Female 56kg) each with eight competitors competing over six days.
The EBC will be turned into a 10 episode prime time show to be shown on ESPN1. This channel can be found on Foxtel (channel 508) on Fetch, or in pubs and clubs across the nation.
The tournament will be conducted by Boxing Queensland and its officials in accordance with Boxing Australia and AIBA rules and with the full support of Boxing Australia.
It is a watershed for our sport. For the first time in 50 years amateur boxing will be appearing regularly on national Australian television. Further to this the EBC are intending to run two more series in 2018 which will provide twenty more weeks of coverage.
This is a great outcome for our sport and as President I ask our community to support this initiative by attending the tournament in person, following their social media and tuning in when the broadcasts commence in September.
Elite Boxing Championship – July 23/24/25 and August 19/20/21 – Souths Sports Club Mortimer road, Acacia Ridge, Queensland.
