Published Mon 05 Dec 2016
As women in sport grows over the years, the next generation of athletes are ready to be nurtured. From 1st to the 4th of December 2016 a group of 26 female boxers across Australia participated in the Female Futures Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport.
This camp was led by Great Britain coach Amanda Groarke with support from National Head Coach Kevin Smith and National Development Coach Don Abnett. State coaches Bess Slater, Mercedas Taaffee, Shara Romer, Leisha Vaughan, Steph Bloomfield and Cindy Boniface were assistant coaches.
26 aspiring boxers participated in four days’ training at AIS, including a resilience training session and lectures on nutrition and recovery.
16 year old Queensland boxer Rachel Loder from Kingscliff Boxing Stables said “The facility has been epic. The AIS Combat Centre has been really good to train in and experience.” Loder said that she had learned ‘a sense of full time boxing training requirements and what it takes”.
Monique Suraci, 15, from Stockade gym in the ACT said “It was challenging & we tried new things. There’s some skills I need to work on. The facilities have been great”.
The Female Futures camp was developed to identify potential medallists at the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games. Every boxer in attendance has the goals of representing Australia at the Commonwealth & Olympic Games.
Once again this was a successful camp and we congratulate the female boxers who participated and we would like to thank the coaches who gave up their time to help develop these boxers.
