In early April, National Development Coach Don Abnett made an interstate trip to Queensland visiting a number of coaches, gyms and athletes. During the trip Don worked alongside Boxing Queensland and it’s TID and Development Program coaches.

He worked with Justis Huni, Super Heavyweight Youth World Champion, discussing training plans and offering assistance where required for the exciting up and comer. Don spent time in Hervey Bay, working with Brittany Roll. Brittany usually trains in Bundaberg with her coach Syd Blair and was recently selected for the Youth Oceania Championships in Samoa. Don was also able to take Brittany to Kilcoy to work with Queensland TID Coach Mark Evans.

While visiting gyms Don also worked with Jai Dennis, Kiwa King and Tyler Harrington, who have also been selected to compete in the Youth Oceania Championships. They discussed training plans leading into the Oceania Championships and possible involvement in camps with their hometown coaches.

Don also visited Connie Chan on the Gold Coast, and Damien Lawlor in Warwick, using the opportunity for coaching development. The trip concluded with a visit to Beaudesert the home of two promising young boxers, Caleb Grey and Dylan Biggs. The trip to Queensland was a success for the development of boxing, overseeing emerging talent in action while also being able to assist coaches and gyms where necessary.
