VALE TONY MADIGAN
Published Mon 30 Oct 2017
Mr. Tony Madigan possibly Australia’s best amateur boxer of all time has passed away.
In 1959 Tony was defeated in the Light Heavyweight Final of the USA Golden Gloves in a very close contest by a young boxer named Cassius Clay.
The following year at the Rome Olympic Games, in the Semi Final of the Light Heavyweight division, Tony was again defeated by the emerging Muhammad Ali. Photos of Muhammad Ali being awarded his Olympic Gold Medal include Tony standing on the Medal Winners dais.
Tony went on to a successful modelling and business career and he spent the last decades living in the South of France.
We understand he passed away yesterday in the United Kingdom.
The Board of Boxing Australia expresses its sympathy to Mrs. Madigan and Family – in Australia its condolences are, in particular, extended to Samantha Madigan, Tony’s niece, who many in the NSW boxing community will know.
An Australian amateur boxing ‘Great’ has passed.
