The Board of Boxing Australia has accepted the offer of the Combat Institute of Australia, which is now responsible for conducting the Boxing High Performance Program, that the Institute meet all costs associated with entering the three Australian men Tokyo Olympic Games Boxers into the 2021 AIBA Elite Men’s World Championships to be held in Serbia, October 26/ November 6 – accordingly, the Board will invite those Boxers to represent Australia at the World Championships if it is possible for them to travel safely at that time. But, because of the uncertainty associated with international travel in 2021 the Board has decided it will not enter any other Boxers into this World Championships.
In regard to Elite Women’s boxing AIBA has not advised of an Elite Women’s World Championships for 2021 because, it is understood, no National Federation has offered to Host this Championships.
Therefore, the next major international tournament available for all of Australia’s Elite Men and Women Boxers will be the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England, July 28/August 8, 2022.
The Board has decided that a Selection Tournament for the Australian Team to compete at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games will be in early April, 2022. The Birmingham Commonwealth Games Boxing Championships will be composed of 16 weight categories – 10 Men’s and 6 Women’s. However, Commonwealth Games Australia is restricted in the number of Australian Team members who can compete in the Commonwealth Games and it has advised Boxing Australia that the maximum number of Boxers who can be in the Australian Team is 10.
With the assistance of the Combat Institute the Board will undertake an analysis of the weight categories and their likely entrants to ascertain in which weight categories Australia is most likely to medal at the Commonwealth Games and, when these are determined, they will be the only weight categories to be contested at the Boxing Australia Selection Tournament to be conducted in April, 2022.
The Board is aware that AIBA proposes to conduct a Youth Men’s and Women’s World Championships in 2022, probably in November, and when official advice is received then the Board will make a decision as to when an Australian Team Selection Tournament for this Championships will be conducted.
