IOC and 2020 Olympic Games
Published Thu 23 May 2019
On May 22 (Swiss time) the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the adoption by the IOC’s Executive Board of the recommendation of its appointed Inquiry Committee for the IOC’s suspension of recognition of AIBA and the appointment of a special taskforce to arrange (i) Boxing Qualification Events to be conducted in the period January – May, 2020, for the 2020 Olympic Games and (ii) the Olympic Games boxing competition. This decision is subject to the approval of the IOC Session to be held on 26 June.
AIBA, as of today 23 May (Swiss time), is in contact with the IOC seeking clarification of the effects of this proposed action and complementary actions.
If this recommendation is adopted at the IOC Session it will have the effect of the 2019 Elite Men’s and Women’s World Championships not being 2020 Olympic Games Qualifying Events and the 2020 Olympic ‘Pathway’ for Boxing not being approved and announced until late June or later.
As the IOC’s proposed actions were only announced yesterday their effect on the ‘Hosting’ of the 2019 Elite Men’s Women’s World Championships by the Russian Boxing Federation has not yet been advised by that Federation.
I shall provide further information as it becomes known.
With best wishes,
Ted Tanner
President
