Newsletter - October

During the month of September five State Futures camps were presented in NSW, QLD, SA, VIC, WA. Each camp was themed specifically to support the squad athletes.

Nationally, 18 selected Futures athletes and 5 coaches attended a 10-day international development camp in Thailand; 9 Emerging elites, all 8 Youth World Championships team members, and a junior boxer.

National Coach / Performance Pathway lead, Jamie Pittman and the Thailand Boxing Association coordinated a 4–day competition sparring series, a round robin competition sparring tournament which was officiated by Thailand’s IBA Referee and Judges.

The series included Thai, Australian and Bhutanese members, and a Vietnamese Women’s team.

The morning of these camps usually began with the Australian athletes weighing in at 6am and a light technical boxing session at 6:30am. There were some amazing performances during the series where athletes adapted to new coaches’ instructions throughout the four days.

The technical sessions were run by Thai and Australian coaches. The athletes were put through several running tests and physical sessions by both Jamie Pittman; CombatAUS Lead, Santiago Neiva and the Australian support coaches Paul Justin and Satinder.

Don’t forget our “Battle of the Belts” series. For information and to challenge, please see below:

Battle of the Belts | Boxing Australia

The first camp with the new High Performance coach Santiago Nieva kicked off on the 18th of September in Brisbane. The Commonwealth Games team was reunited after a well-earned rest, with the podium potential boxers joining in on the week of training and testing. Boxing Australia’s Head Coach, Jamie Pittman also attended after running a two-week Youth Worlds and Futures camp in Thailand.

Coach Santiago presented a sit-down information talk followed by a team dinner allowing everyone the opportunity to catch up on the first night.  The schedule consisted of boxing related techniques and a mix of strength and conditioning testing. To spice things up a full cooking class was booked for an afternoon with a little healthy competition of whose was the best!

As he returns home and reflects on his experience, we ask Charlie Senior a few fun questions and about his time at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Are you a dog person or cat person?

Dog - I have a Blue American Staffy named Kaos

How many pairs of shoes do you currently own?

25-30

If you could meet any one person who would it be?

David Attenborough

Who would be your dream sparring session?

Vasyl Anatoliyovych Lomachenko

Pick one, summer or winter?

I am definitely a winter person -  great for lounging around in comfortable clothes.

What’s your pre-bout meal?

Pancakes and chocolate milkshake.

Best tip that a coach has given you?

Start fast and make sure to have your feet moving straight away.

Your biggest supporter in life?

Without doubt, mum and dad.

What did you gain from this experience?

I gained a lot of experience mentally and physically, knowing that boxing is a game of inches so take everything you can in that short space of time. Also go out and do the best that you can and enjoy it.

How would you rate the trip overall and why?

A memorable moment, I really enjoyed myself.  The atmosphere was great and it was great to be surrounded by different boxing teams and sports every day. It's definitely an experience to remember and the highlight of my career so far.

What are some of your medium/short term goals? (Within the next year or so)

With the World Championships on the horizon I want to do everything in my power to make the 2023 boxing team. I want to stay progressing, keep striving for my goals, stay postive, and keep a healthy mindset.  Also want to be better than the one I was yesterday.

Australian Women's Boxing
  Women's Boxing Content

The Women’s Committee has been very busy over the last month. The fundraising T-shirt has been finalised with 25 wonderful sponsors. We really appreciate the support from our sponsors.

The T-Shirt is available now for pre-order. It costs just $40.00 if you are picking it up from the venue for the Australian Elite Boxing Championships in Adelaide, or $50 if you want it posted out.

Please get behind our fundraising initiative as the funds raised are going into events to develop women of all ages and across all roles in boxing. In 2023 we are planning to hold Women Come and Try days across the country aimed at attracting women and girls; mothers and daughters into the sport. We also are planning working with State associations to hold more all women development days. There has been so much good feedback from those held this year the Women’s Committee want to assist in growing these events.

Currently we are writing a grant application to get funds to assist in holding an Empowerment Forum and various workshops. We intend to invite speakers from different sports who have reached the pinnacle in their sports, women who have reached great heights in business, professionals who can advise on a number of key issues such as managing periods, nutrition for women athletes and healthy weight management. We want to hold workshops to give participants information on how to become a coach, RJ, and administrators. The participants will leave the event with new friends and contacts. They will have contact details of people who will be happy to mentor them. The event will be open to men who have a keen interest in developing women’s boxing. The dates we are looking to hold the event are 10 to 13 March 2023. There is a lot to do in organising the event. Being successful in the grant application will be important as will raising as much money as we can from the T-shirts.

There are only 13 Fridays left until Christmas. You could complete your Christmas shopping here with the Australian Women’s Boxing T-shirt. The T-shirt is a unisex design so suits both men and women.

Again thank you to all of our amazing sponsors who have not only provided support through funding but have offered to help in any way they can.

Jemma Dale - NSW Referee and Judge
  Jemma Q & A

10 questions answered by Jemma Dale from Boxing NSW.

How do they score boxing?

There are three main criteria when scoring boxing:

1 - Quality punches on the target zone

2 - Ring Dominance

3 - Competitiveness

How many rounds are there in boxing?

Depending on your age and experience the duration of your round can differ, however it will always be three rounds.

Who is your Idol?

My idol would have to be my dad who is currently battling lung cancer. He is the true definition of a fighter and inspires me every day!

Why would someone want to be a boxing referee or judge?

People in boxing have such a deep love & appreciation for the sport, and that never really goes away, so I think that plays a huge factor into why people sign up for the job. I also think it’s great for coaches and fighters to understand the role of a R&J and start to close the stereotype and barriers that officials face.

Where is your favorite place to go on vacation?

My favourite place to holiday would be the yearly family trip to Nelson’s Bay. We spend our days at the beach, fishing or quad biking and at night play board games. I think it’s really the company that makes the trip!

What is your idea of a perfect day?

My idea of a perfect day is spending it with my partner Matt, our dog Loui and our soon to be little girl who I’m due to give birth to in a few weeks’ time.

What is the best part about being a boxing referee or judge?

The best part for me about being a R&J with boxing Australia is it has been another chapter in my boxing life. It’s given me a different perdpective and appreciation of the sport; not having to make weight is pretty fantastic.

If you could tell your boxing self one thing, what would it be and why?

If I could tell my boxing self one thing it would be that in this sport your mental health is just as important as your physical. One does not outweigh the other.

Top tip for athletes coming from a referee and judge

My top tip for athletes is to study the rule book, understand the criteria of scoring because as an official you can tell the difference between boxers who know & those who just jump in and punch on, at the end of the day this is a competitive sport so don’t sell yourself short without knowing how to compete to your full potential.
