Newsletter - November

A small group of Victoria based higher categorised HP athletes have been training in Queensland over the past few weeks and have linked up with those athletes already based in Queensland, taking part in team training sessions at both their home gyms and the Eastside gym in central Brisbane. Sparring sessions with local athletes has been taking place at the Gold Coast PCYC, Shape Up fitness and the Boxing Shop. The on-going restrictions in Victoria will necessitate this arrangement to continue in the short term at least.

Development days and group sessions involving members of the HP Elite team have now been arranged in north, central and south-east Queensland to enable local athletes to join in and work with the qualified and prospective Tokyo Olympic athletes. It will be of great benefit for the younger and emerging elite athletes in Queensland to meet with and experience training with this group of successful BAL world class athletes. Sections of the training sessions will be delivered by the HP athletes including warm-ups, footwork speed and quickness, and technical and tactical content.

A High Performance programme residential camp originally slated to take place at the AIS in November/December will now be rescheduled and relocated to south-east Queensland and will become a continuation of the training camp already taking place there. It is hoped that movement across state and territory borders will be a little easier by December enabling the majority of the prospective Tokyo Olympic world qualifier team athletes to attend. Select local elite athletes will be invited and encouraged to attend and take part in the boxing specific afternoon sessions.

BAL intend to base most of the HP Program activity out of South East Queensland for the foreseeable future. Particularly with an eye on the World Olympic Qualification event – which is proposed for May 2021, and for preparations for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Also recognising that the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are only a year later. It seems increasingly likely that most of the preparations for these events will be from within Australia, so BAL are looking at coordinating as much centralised activity as possible and feel that, for a range of reasons, Queensland is the best location to deliver this from. BAL have commenced positive talks with the Queensland Academy of Sport who are keen to open their doors to supporting the BAL S&C, facility and servicing needs which will be an important element of the preparation programmes.
